Auto Download and Manual Download
The App Download Method controls how Technician Apps receive the latest updates from the Command Center.
By default, technicians use Manual Download, which is also the current behavior. Technicians must manually download the latest data before new settings and changes appear on their device.
With the ESM Export Project, we are introducing Auto Download as an additional option.
Auto Download does not remove the Export requirement for applicable Flat Rate and ESM changes. Users must still complete the Export from the Command Center. The difference is how the Technician Apps receive those updates afterward.
The App Download Method can be found under:
Settings > Technician > App Download Method
Manual Download
Manual Download is the default setting and follows the current Technician App behavior.
The process is:
- Changes are made in the Command Center.
- Applicable Flat Rate and ESM changes are manually exported.
- The latest updates become available to the Technician Apps.
- Each technician must manually select Download Settings in the app to receive the latest data.
Until the technician performs the download, the new changes will not appear on their device.
Auto Download
Auto Download reduces the number of manual steps required from technicians.
The Command Center workflow remains the same:
- Changes are made in the Command Center.
- Applicable Flat Rate and ESM changes must still be manually exported.
- After the Export is completed, the latest updates become available to technicians.
- Technicians receive a device notification that updates are available.
- The Technician App automatically downloads the latest data while the device is connected to the internet.
Technicians no longer need to manually select Download Settings for these updates.
What Auto Download Applies To
Auto Download is not limited to Flat Rate and ESM Export changes.
It also applies to supported Non-Export configuration changes that affect the Technician Apps.
Examples can include:
- Tags
- Dispatching settings
- Diagnostic settings
- Invoice settings
- Company settings
- Other supported configuration changes that are sent to the Technician Apps without requiring an Export
For Export changes, such as applicable Flat Rate and ESM updates, the Command Center Export is still required first.
For Non-Export changes, no Export is required. Once the change is available to the app, Auto Download can deliver it automatically to the technician's device.
Manual vs. Auto Download
Manual Download
- Default and current behavior
- Export is still required for applicable Flat Rate and ESM changes
- Technician must manually select Download Settings
- Changes do not appear until the technician completes the download
Auto Download
- Optional new download method
- Export is still required for applicable Flat Rate and ESM changes
- Technician receives a device notification when updates are available
- Updates download automatically while the device is connected to the internet
- Also supports applicable Non-Export changes
Notes:
- Internet connection is required
- Auto Download requires the technician's device to have an internet connection.
- If the device is offline, the update will be downloaded once the app can connect to the internet.
- Manual Download remains the default
- Dealers who do not enable Auto Download will continue using the existing Manual Download process.
- Technicians will continue to select Download Settings when they need the latest data.
- Auto Download also supports Non-Export changes
- Supported configuration changes that do not require an Export can also be automatically delivered to technician devices.
- Examples include Tags, Dispatching Settings, Technician settings, General Settings, Templates, and other supported app-related changes.
- Download method applies after changes are available
- The App Download Method controls how the technician receives the update.
- It does not change whether a setting itself requires an Export.
