Overview - Version 20 - ESM Export Project
Overview
The ESM Export Project creates a more consistent and reliable way to publish changes from the P3 Command Center to the Technician Apps.
Today, Flat Rate already uses the Export process. When applicable Flat Rate changes are made, users must complete an Export before those changes are made available to technicians.
With this project, we are keeping the current Flat Rate behavior and extending the same Export process to applicable ESM sections and settings.
The goal is to create one uniform workflow for publishing important configuration changes, while giving dealers better control and visibility over what is sent to the office and field.
Current Behavior
Before this project, Flat Rate and ESM followed different publishing workflows.
Flat Rate
Flat Rate changes already require an Export before they are made available to the Technician Apps.
This behavior will remain the same.
ESM
Applicable ESM changes currently follow a different process and do not use the same Export workflow as Flat Rate.
This means users currently have different publishing behavior depending on whether they are updating Flat Rate or ESM.
What's Changing
Applicable ESM sections and settings will now follow the same Export process already used by Flat Rate.
After making an applicable ESM or Flat Rate change:
- The change will remain pending.
- The Export icon will indicate that there are changes ready to be published.
- The user will review and start the Export.
- The changes will be published to the Command Center.
- The changes will be packaged and made available to the Technician Apps.
This creates one consistent publishing process for both Flat Rate and applicable ESM changes.
Not every setting in the system will require an Export. Some settings will continue to use the existing Non-Export process.
Why We Are Making This Change
The main goal of the project is to make the update process more consistent, controlled, and easier to understand.
One Consistent Workflow
Users will no longer need to remember different publishing behavior for Flat Rate and ESM.
Applicable changes will follow the same Export process.
More Control
Users can finish making changes before publishing them instead of having changes immediately flow through different processes.
Review Before Publishing
Users can review the changes waiting to be exported before starting the Export.
Batch Multiple Changes
Multiple updates can be grouped together and published through one Export.
Better Visibility
Users will have clearer information about:
- What changes are waiting to be exported
- When an Export is running
- When an Export has completed
- Which technicians have received the latest updates
- Which technicians may still be out of sync
Better Troubleshooting
Improved tracking makes it easier to determine whether an issue is related to the Export, a technician download, a configuration change, or an outdated app version.
Settings
The project introduces updates to how settings are managed and delivered.
At a high level, settings will fall into two groups:
Export Settings
Applicable Flat Rate and ESM changes that require an Export before they are published.
Non-Export Settings
Settings that do not require a full Export and continue to be delivered through the Non-Export process.
The project also includes an App Download Method setting that controls how technicians receive updates after an Export.
Dealers can choose between:
- Auto Download
- Manual Download
A separate article will explain the Export settings, Non-Export settings, and App Download Method in more detail.
Reports and Tracking
The project also introduces improved reporting for Export activity and Technician App synchronization.
The new Export Logs & Technician Download Tracking area gives dealers visibility into:
- Recent Command Center Exports
- Non-Export configuration changes
- Technician download status
- Out of sync technicians
- Technician App versions
These reports help dealers understand whether the latest changes have been published and whether technicians are using the latest available data.
A separate article will cover each report, its purpose, and how to use it.
Summary
The ESM Export Project standardizes how important changes are published from the Command Center.
Flat Rate already uses the Export process today, and that behavior is staying the same.
The main change is that applicable ESM sections and settings will now follow the same Export workflow, creating a more consistent process across the system.
The project provides:
- One consistent Export workflow
- Better control over when changes are published
- The ability to review changes before Export
- The ability to batch multiple changes together
- Improved technician update options
- Better Export and synchronization tracking
- Better visibility for troubleshooting
Overall, the project creates a more consistent and reliable way to keep the Command Center and Technician Apps up to date.
